The Ashoka Diamond – Ancient Fire In Your Hands

The Ashoka Diamond is one of the most famous gems on the planet. Part myth, part legend, the history of this fiery gemstone is shrouded in the mists of time. Named after an Indian ruler who governed his people with compassion and peace, the story behind the Ashoka legend stretches back to 626 BC. Rumor has it that the diamond was imbued with the characteristics of this famous ruler, and that the diamond carries the power to grant happiness, peace and harmony to all who wear it. The original diamond is a 41-Carat flawless gemstone with a unique and distinctive cut which allows all of the purity, and clarity of the fire within, to shine upon the world.

The modern Ashoka Diamond refers to a cut diamond that is inspired by the original stone. William Goldberg developed the first modern Ashoka cut and it has become known as one of the finest and most exclusive types of cut diamond across the world. Based on the antique cushion cut, the modern diamond cut stays true to the original brilliance with 62 individual facets which are able to reflect and refract the fire within. The Ashoka cut can be used for all types of jewelry, and each diamond is a work of art in itself.

The cut of an Ashoka piece of fine jewelry is distinctive and immediately recognizable. True diamond lovers will always seek to include a piece of Ashoka cut jewelry in their collection and the beauty of owning an Ashoka diamond is that it is like carrying a fragment of history into the modern age as a fitting tribute to the legend of Ashoka.

William Goldberg And His Exquisite Stones

William Goldberg’s goal was to create things that brought a smile to peoples faces,  and he succeeded time and time again. Goldberg not only made people smile, he brought awe to their faces with the breath taking stones he created. Goldberg bought, sold, and created some of the world’s most radiant stones. He started in the Diamond District of 47th Street and maintained part of the historic West side area after his proclaimed fame as a gem dealer. Goldberg believed in family and values. Staying where he began was important to him. Doing what he loved was his passion.

Goldberg served three terms as the Diamond Dealers Club president. He was known for cutting a gem to the fraction of its original size to make sure every stone lived up to its full potential and would dazzle all those that laid eyes on its enchanting beauty. Goldberg believed that each stone had its own unique beauty and he carved until he found the luster inside the stone. Goldberg is responsible for some of the most precious, expensive and rare stones in the world.

The Blue Lili is a 30 carat trapezoid blue diamond. Goldberg named the diamond after his dear wife Lili. It is said that as he carved the stone, its powerful character and exquisite color reminded him of his wife.

The Briolette is a 75 carat diamond that was delivered to Goldberg at 160.5 carats. Once the diamond was carved and shaped to perfection allowing light to reflect from every angle of the piece it was certified by the GIA as being the largest Briolette shaped diamond graded at that period in time. The certification reflects his passion for perfecting every stone he touches as if he understands the stones from the inside out.

William Goldberg’s touch and love will forever remain in every gem he ever handled.

The Ashoka Diamond, the Greatness of History Transformed in the Present

The William Goldberg Diamond Corporation recently unveiled a new collection of diamonds to the world named after the ancient and beloved Indian leader, Ashoka the Great.  Ashoka converted to Buddhism during his reign and devoted himself to easing the suffering and misery of his people, turning away from war to embrace peace and serenity.  His name meant “without sorrow” and it is the serene, joyful beauty that lives as an icy fire within each Ashoka diamond that gives it this name.  Originally, crafted from southern Indian diamonds the name was almost pre-destined as these diamonds were serene, languid, and ethereal—what else could they be but Ashoka?

All Ashoka diamonds have been crafted to contain 62 rounded facets.  These multiple, carefully rounded facets give these diamonds a unique and other-worldly shimmer as light graces their surface.  Enthusiasts of the Ashoka cut enjoy their uniqueness, their ability to appear larger than their actual carat—a feat that could only be created by the artists at William Goldberg.

Recent celebrity sightings have made the Ashoka Diamond an in-demand property as the very nature of the ring (engagement, award show) displays the confidence in both the longevity of the relationship and in the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation.  The Ashoka Diamond collection is a collection of heirloom jewelry, living works of artistry and craftsmanship.

The Ashoka Diamond collection contains: rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, watches, and cufflinks.  Both men and women can enjoy these one of a kind items.  An Ashoka Diamond from William Goldberg tells as much about the wearer as the maker.  People who purchase a jewel like this are unique individuals with a taste for the finer things in life, and who can distinguish between expense and quality.

The line of Ashoka Diamonds is the latest in a series of diamonds created at William Goldberg, and hopefully not the last.

World Renowned Ashoka Diamond Jewelry

Ashoka Diamond Jewelry reigns as some of the most exquisite jewelry in the modern world.  Known for its unusual beauty and graceful design qualities, the jewelry got its name from one of the most famous diamonds ever to exist.  That stone was named for a much-beloved Indian emperor who taught his people the value of peace and harmony after spending years of his life as a fierce warrior.  Today’s jewelry reflects both strength in design and the peaceful serenity of everlasting beauty.

The William Goldberg Diamond Corporation is responsible for improving upon the original cut of this famous diamond by adding more dimensions and increasing the diamond’s capacity to reflect light. Slightly rounding the corners of the stone and adding a rectangular girdle to the surface achieved this.  The company patented the recreated design in the year 2000.  Since that time, William Goldberg Diamond jewelry has gained much acclaim for creating some of the most sought after contemporary jewelry pieces currently in existence.

The jewelry has gained legendary status, in part, by its high desirability, rarity and for being the choice of famous individuals.  The diamonds are currently being used in a collection of watches that will sell from $200K to $2million each.  William Goldman’s exacting standards still come into play today, long after his demise.  There simply is no comparison.

Each diamond in this collection appears to be alive with movement from the refracted light that bounces within the interior surfaces of the gem.  The color and clarity are top grade making them highly prized, albeit rare, jewels.  Additionally, each diamond has been inscribed with a microscopic certification number that authenticates is by the Gemological Institute of America and the American Gem Society.  This increases the value of the diamonds considerably and certifies that each is genuine and of the high quality that it is advertised to be.

There is no other diamond jewelry in the world as beautiful as Ashoka Diamond Jewelry.   The name is synonymous with exquisite beauty and highest quality.

The Rarity of the Ashoka Cut Diamond

The rare  Ashoka Cut Diamond is  precisely cut using an extra long rough cut,  a difficulty level that makes  these precious jewels particularly rare and highly esteemed.  Facet placements are meticulously created to provide maximum brilliance and sparkle.  The final product imparts an inventive effulgence of spectacular light  found in no other cut of diamond.  The cut is timeless, yet unusual enough to be highly esteemed by the  contemporary lover of diamonds.

The ingenious symmetry and strategically placed angles of this diamond cut have ranked its inclusion among the most highly sought jewels in the world.  No other cut can lay claim to this kind of beauty and shine.  When combined with perfect color, carat weight and clarity, these gems become works of highly valued art.

It is said that diamonds are the best conductors of heat in the world.  This cut appears as though it has millions of burning stars captured within a tiny crystal vessel. As the light reflects through the facets, it gives the appearance of movement and seems to come alive and dance with brilliance and shine. This quality is what imparts these diamonds with their highly-desired  characteristics of  unusual beauty and makes them so highly coveted.

These uniquely cut diamonds have achieved remarkable fame for their flawless beauty, recreated by William Goldberg and Company with slight modifications that make them sparkle even more than before.  Even America’s most famous jewelry company cannot boast of this exclusive cut and design in any of their highly acclaimed diamonds.  William Goldberg managed to slightly round the corners of the original design in a way that refracts the light into an even more dimensional effect resulting in a diamond like no other.

Another exclusive aspect of the rare  Ashoka Cut Diamond is that the cut, and the manner in which the light is refracted through the interior surfaces, causes it to appear almost 30% larger than diamonds that are cut using  in the rectangular emerald cut configuration.

The Man Behind the Beauty

William Goldberg, born in 1925, has become the professional diamond dealer that everyone wants jewelry from.  But, after all the beautiful creations he has made, who wouldn’t want his jewelry?  He dedicated his entire life to selling the most beautiful cut diamonds that you could find.  He started out his business with diamonds in 1952 by creating the company known as Goldberg & Weiss.  This company was created with Irving Weiss, a talented and efficient diamond cutter.  After learning the ropes of business, he really got the diamond business kicking when he formed the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation located in New York City.  This definitely doesn’t end his term as a diamond entrepreneur.  He earned enough respect in his talent with diamonds to become president of the New York Diamond Dealers Club.  Although his life ended in 2003, his reputation has not.  The company is still producing diamonds of top value to its customers.  His name will be carried on and remembered as long as diamonds are still being created.  Goldberg started this ongoing business which has created a cut of diamond that is known among dealers everywhere, the Ashoka diamond.  This diamond is reputable not only for its rarity, but also for its intense beauty.  The time and enduring patience put into creating this diamond can only be by a cutter from Goldberg’s company.  Blemish-free and flawless, these diamonds make all other diamonds seem like a rock on the side of the road.  Goldberg never settled for anything less than best and the company finds it important to keep that attitude to this very day.

How the Ashoka Diamond Comes to Be

While everyone knows that diamonds are the most exquisite stone to wear in jewelry, many people don’t know exactly how the diamonds are created.  Obviously diamonds don’t just appear out of thin air, or you would be able to buy them out of quarter machines in your local market.  When people say that diamonds take a long time to be created, they are not exaggerating.  Diamonds can take hundreds of millions of years to form.  They are formed by intense pressure deep in the earth and eventually forced out by volcanic magma.  Being able to cut a diamond well takes quite a lot of experience due to the fact that they are an extremely hard rock.  Also, because they are so rare and valued, messing up the cut of a diamond is extremely looked down upon.

Once the diamond is found in some way or another, turning it into The Ashoka Diamond is the trick.  The diamond is cut with a steel saw wheel that is lubricated with oil and diamond powder.  The look of The Ashoka Diamond comes from delicate cut created from different uses of refracted and reflected light.  The different light angles give the especially sparkling look that everyone desires in their diamonds.  Who wants a diamond that is dull and lifeless?  Nobody!  The look that Ashoka has is a look that was initially created for the sole purpose of pleasing people.  The goal of these diamonds was to focus on light, love, and joy, all of which are to this day brought out through the beauty of these diamonds.

Ideas for that Special Someone

Oh dear, a birthday, anniversary, or holiday has come and once again, you are clueless as to what to get for that special someone.  You have done the cutesy dates with her favorite candy and her favorite movie a hundred times, and you want to spice it up a bit.  While those things are always very nice to include in a relationship, changing things up a little bit sometimes adds surprise and excitement to relationships.  Maybe you decide you are going to take her to do something on her bucket list to surprise her, or perhaps you take her on a surprise road trip to show off your spontaneity.  However, you don’t have to go anywhere to sweep her off of her feet.  One way to really do this is to handpick her a piece of jewelry that she will treasure forever.  This doesn’t mean finding the first thing that you see in a jewelry store, wrapping it up, and saying, “you are special.”  That isn’t special, and a girl can definitely tell when you have or haven’t put thought into the jewelry that you got her.  They look for the meaning behind the gift over the actual gift.  If you really want to wow her with jewelry, your best option is to get her a piece of jewelry with an Ashoka Cut Diamond.  The Ashoka Cut Diamond is definitely top of the line, and she will know that you put thought into that gift.  Pick out something that fits with her personality and top it off with one of those diamonds and she will be gleaming brighter than the sun.

What Makes an Ashoka Diamond?

What is so different about an Ashoka Diamond from a regular diamond?  True, diamonds are stunning and rare.  True, diamonds are cut in different ways to show off the sparkling beauty throughout the entire stone.  True, diamonds are a girl’s best friend.  But, when it comes to the Ashoka Diamond, there has to be some reason behind the wonder that it brings out.

While all diamonds are beautiful and rare, many people do not exactly notice all the faults that a diamond truly has.  Diamonds are judged just like gymnasts and divers are judged.  Each little tiny fault, while unnoticed by the audience, deducts value from the performance or appearance.  So with diamonds, each tiny blemish and fault deducts value from the diamond. These diamonds, however, are top of the line diamonds that you can be sure are top quality. You most definitely will not see one of these diamonds with air bubbles and cracks galore.  These diamonds are smooth, air-free, and blemish-free, which puts these diamonds at top value on the market. This line of diamonds by William Goldberg is specialized to be the greatest gift you could get a loved one. (They could even be used as a gift to yourself).  If you want diamonds that have definitely not been taken care of, you will have to look elsewhere, because these diamonds have been taken care of with the utmost respect.  You will not find diamonds with a rarer beauty than these from William Goldberg. Why settle for something that doesn’t make you happy when you know exactly where to find the most beautiful diamond?

The Legacy of William Goldberg

The name William Goldberg is synonymous with exquisite diamond jewelry.  Goldberg, only recently died in Oct. 20, 2003, at the age of 77. He started out as a diamond cutter in 1948. He soon found a passion in diamond sales after collaborating with Irving Weiss to found Goldberg & Weiss in 1952. By 1973, Goldberg left to found his own company, the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation. He was elected president of the New York Diamond Dealers Club in 1978 because he was held in such high esteem in the diamond community. Goldberg presided through 1984. Some of his more notable achievements include such as opening the club to the media and allowing women to become members. He was inducted into Gemological Institute of America’s League of Honor in 1995.

He famously traded in rare, well known diamonds. Some of the more notable diamonds included the Queen of Holland diamond, the Premier Rose diamond, the Red Shield diamond and the Pumpkin diamond. The Premier Rose was sold in 1989 for $10 million dollars.

It was likely the most ever paid for a diamond at the time. It came from a 353.9-carat rough diamond he picked off a conveyor belt from a South African diamond mine. It was cut into three flawless diamonds, including the 137-carat pear-shaped Premier Rose.

To honor Goldberg, his estate has contributed a significant charitable gift to the Gemological Institute of America,  establishing  the William Goldberg Endowed Scholarship Fund. This gift will allow for the training of future generations of diamond and jewelry professionals. This gift brings the William Goldberg Diamond Corp.'s cumulative giving to the Institute to more than $350,000.

The Ashoka Diamond

The Ashoka Diamond comes in a variety of carats...but what exactly is a carat? Just like a dollar is divided into 100 pennies, a carat is comprised of 100 points. For example, a 25-point diamond weighs 0.25 carats. But two diamonds of equal weight can have exceedingly different monetary values depending on other factors, including cut, clarity, and color. You will find that most diamonds you encounter in fine jewelry weigh less than one carat.

Many people mistakenly think that a greater carat means a better, more attractive gem.  This is not always the case. It needs to also be symmetrical, well cut, and have few flaws to be truly outstanding. If you are concerned about size, you may be interested in choosing a gem with a fancy shape. These often appear larger than standard large gems.
The Hope Diamond on display at the National Mu...Image via Wikipedia
However, even a fraction of a carat can make a large difference in the cost or value of the diamond. Precision in crafting the diamond is crucial. In the diamond industry, weight is usually measured to the hundred thousandths of a carat, and then rounded to a hundredth of a carat.  Diamond weights more than one carat are displayed in carats and decimals. Don’t confuse carat with karat, as in “16K gold,” which refers to the purity of gold.

The carat, the international standard unit in weighing diamonds and gemstones, actually gets its name from the carob seed. In ancient Rome, these small seeds had a fairly uniform weight, so the first gem traders used them as counterweights in their balance scales. The modern metric carat, equal to 0.2 grams, was adopted by the United States in 1913 and every other country followed suit.  This is about the same weight as a standard paperclip. The Ashoka diamond comes in different carats, and housed in stunning jewelry that appeals to sophisticated diamond enthusiasts.

Each diamond in our Ashoka diamond jewelry collection is laser inscribed with a certificate number. What are these certificate numbers? All reputable diamonds are certified to by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or AGS (American Gem Society).  A certificate is a "blueprint" of a diamond, it tells you the diamond's exact measurements and weight, and characterizes its cut and quality. It points out all the exact characteristics of the stone. Each diamond has its own identity and value as described in a unique certificate.

A certificate is not the same thing as a diamond appraisal. A certificate will describe the quality of a diamond, but it does not place a specific cash value on the gem. An appraisal places a monetary value on your diamond, and it does not certify the quality of the diamond.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS) are the two most widely regarded and recognized diamond grading labs in the world. There are also smaller labs --check with your retailer to make sure your diamond is certified.   Different labs have different grading standards. Some have much more lax standards than others. You may want to do some research on the lab before buying your diamond to ensure the quality of it.

Shopping for certified diamonds allows you to make a better choices about your diamond purchases and to comparison shop. You can evaluate one diamond with a particular weight and quality with other diamonds of similar weight and quality and determine which is the better value. By comparison shopping this way, many consumers find that Ashoka diamond jewelry is superior in quality and value to its competitors.

An Ashoka Cut Diamond for Your Engagement Ring

An Ashoka Cut Diamond is an elegant choice for your future wife’s engagement ring. However, choosing a ring she will fall in love with is not a task to be taken lightly.  Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting her ring:

First, you should pay attention to what she wears now. Most women have a definite preference for either white gold or platinum or yellow gold. Does she wear a lot of modern jewelry, with unique styling? Does she prefer classic looking pieces? Make a note of the kind of jewelry she wears often, not items she only wears occasionally.

Next, take the hint. Has she ever said what her favorite jewelry styles are? If not, take her to the jewelry store. See what captures her attention. If you want to be subtle, say you're looking for a new watch as a present for someone else, but be sure to walk past the engagement ring counter.

Also, think about what would look best on her hand. An elongated diamond, such as an oval, can make short fingers look longer. Wide bands usually make fingers appear even shorter. A setting that's more subtle could get lost on large hands. Do you know her ring size? Does she have rings that she already wears on her engagement finger? Maybe a friend could get hold of one long enough for you to have the size determined.

Round Ashoka cut diamonds are the number one shape chosen by brides. However, she might prefer an elongated marquise, oval or square cut diamond. Look at her current collection to see if she would rather have a solitaire diamond or a cluster of diamonds.  You won’t regret doing your homework when she sees what’s inside that little box.

What Makes an Ashoka Diamond Superior?

When we speak of an Ashoka diamonds clarity, we are talking about the presence of certain characteristics on the surface of (blemishes) and within (inclusions) the diamond. If you think about the huge amount of pressure it takes to create a diamond and the fact that diamonds are not formed in an automated laboratory, it's no surprise that nearly every diamond is flawed. In fact, it is often that these flaws make diamonds unique and contribute to their beauty. None is absolutely perfect under 10× magnification, though some come close. Known as flawless diamonds, these are exceptionally rare. Most jewelers have never actually seen a flawless diamond.

There are two types of flaws: inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions refer to flaws on the inside and blemishes refer to flaws on the surface. Inclusions include flaws like as air bubbles, cracks, and non-diamond minerals found in the diamond. Blemishes include scratches, rivets, and chips. Some blemishes occur during as they are being cut. Diamonds with no or few flaws in clarity are more expensive than those with less clarity, since they are so rare.

Diamonds are graded for clarity by 10x loupe magnification. Grades range from Flawless (perfectly clear diamonds), to Included 3 (diamonds which possess flaws that are visible to the naked eye). We would recommend not buying a diamond that has easily-seen blemishes.  Stones that are VVS2 to F are very expensive. Most couples will opt for something between SI2 and VS1, and cannot tell the difference. There are certificates that will come with your diamond to assure the quality and clarity level of the stone. When you
buy Ashoka Diamonds, you can be confident that you are buying high quality gems with stunning clarity.

What makes an Ashoka Diamond Different?

It might be easy to assume that every diamond is as good as the next, and that size is the only thing that really matters. After all, you hear stories every day about a celebrity wearing a huge diamond piece of jewelry and how special that piece is, strictly because of the diamond's size. Yes, size is one of the determining factors in how valuable a diamond is, but that isn't all there is to consider. The cut of a diamond is also important. The Ashoka diamond is one that is highly coveted; both for its size and it's unique, and beautiful cut.

Size Considerations
As you know, diamond size is measured by carats. Pieces of jewelry commonly have diamonds that range from small chips to one or two carats. More expensive pieces of jewelry might have larger diamonds, but an Ashoka diamond starts off with a rough that is 15 carats in size. These aren't your everyday roughs, so immediately a diamond has to be pretty large as a rough to even qualify for being cut to the Ashoka standard. In fact, only about 200 roughs are found each year that qualify to become Ashoka diamonds.

The Final Cut
Once a rough qualifies for being cut as an Ashoka, it goes into the hands of a master jeweler for the cutting process. The Ashoka diamond, when it is complete, will have 62 brilliant facets and be shaped in a broad, somewhat rectangular shape. In fact, the shape of this unique cut makes diamonds appear much larger than comparable diamonds cut to another standard. In other words, Ashoka diamonds just look bigger.

Clarity and color also figure into the totality of any diamond. Ashoka diamonds have very high standards for these two factors as well. When you see an Ashoka diamond in all its brilliance, you'll understand why discerning jewelry fans consider them to be the best in the world.
